Details

This little dwelling of a poor Irish farmer is in utter contrast to that of the rich farmer nearby. The farmer would let a small piece of ground to the labourer, who would pay off the rent in labour, about 80 days in the year.

For the rest of the time he could work for himself or for wages. The house is of the simplest kind, only one room with a bare hearth and a floor of packed earth.

Their only livestock would be a few hens or ducks. Such a labourer, if permanently employed on the same farm, would have some milk, vegetables and occasionally a piece of salt beef or bacon from the farmhouse and his wife would also be employed there in the house or farmyard.
